3. MEDICINAL FORMULAE
N.B. These medicines ought to be made as freshly as possible - the infusions and decoctions never in quantities to last longer than four days. An appropriate diet should be planned, and strictly dhered to, in all cases of ill-health.
Stomach and Liver
Equal parts of Golden Seal
American Mandrake Gentian
Angelica
To 1 ounce of the mixture add 1 and a half pints of water, boil, and simmer to 1 pint. Wineglass doses thrice daily.
Flatulence
Balm . . half ounce
Angelica . . half ounce
Pennyroyal . . half ounce
Cloves . . 1 drachm
An infusion in 1 and a half pints boiling water to be taken in wineglass doses (warm) as required.
Blood
Blue Flag Root . . 1 ounce
Burdock . . . half ounce
Red Clover . . half ounce
Yellow Dock . . half ounce
Sarsaparilla . . three quarter ounce
Wild Ginger . . . 1 drachm
Boil in 3 pints of water, simmering down to 2 pints. Dose, 3 tablespoons, thrice daily.
Bronchial
Horehound . . 1 ounce
Coltsfoot . . 1 ounce
Marshmallow . . half ounce
Valerian . . half ounce
Pleurisy Root . . half ounce
Boil gently in 3 pints of water for 10 minutes. Dose, wineglassful three or four times daily.
Rheumatism
Equal parts of Black Cohosh Poke Root
Prickly Ash Agrimony
Yarrow
One ounce of the mixture to 1 pint of water, boiled, and simmered for 10 minutes. Dose, wineglassful three times daily.
Laxative (mild)
Dandelion Root . . 1 ounce
Mountain Flax . . 1 ounce
Golden Seal . . 1 ounce
Cloves . . . half ounce
Boil in two pints of water and simmer for 10 minutes. A wineglass to teacup dose, warm, at bedtime.
Kidney and Bladder
Buchu . . . 1 ounce
Parsley Piert . . 1 ounce
Wild Carrot . half ounce
It. Pellitory . half ounce
Juniper . . half ounce
Decoction of 3 pints simmered to 2 pints in wineglass doses 3 or 4 times daily.
Nervine
Valerian . . 1 ounce
Scullcap . 1 ounce
Mistletoe . half ounce
Wood Betony . . half ounce
Vervain . . half ounce
Boil slowly in three pints of water for 10 minutes. Dose, wineglassful thrice daily.
Composition Powder
Bayberry Bark (powdered) 1 ounce
Wild Ginger . . . half ounce
Cayenne . . . 1 drachm
A teaspoonful of the mixture to a teacupful of boiling water is taken warm at bed-time to ward off the effects of chill, and as a general stimulant.
Coffin's Sarsaparilla Compound
"Take of sarsaparilla-root and sassafras-chips, sliced, of each one ounce ; snake-root, bruised, liquorice-root, sliced, of each half-an-ounce ; macerate them in one quart of water for ten minutes, then take out the sarsaparilla and bruise it, return it to the liquor, and boil for ten minutes ; let it stand till cool, then strain. Dose, a wineglassful three or four times a day."
