Ayurvedic Medicine

Ayurveda means the science of long life. Ayurvedic medicine therefore is a traditional Indian wholistic system of medicine which relates emotional and mental balance to physical health and harmony within the body.

The five elements

Ayurvedic medicine recognizes the fundamental differences between people. That means that not everyone would be treated the same for the same symptoms.

In Chinese medicine we have water, wood, fire, earth and metal. In western alchemy there were only four elements, and the Chinese metal corresponds to the air element; and there was no counterpart for wood.

In ayurvedic medicine the four elements are Akasha (ether), Vayu (air), Agni (fire) and Ap (water).

Tridosha

The three Doshas are Vata (air), Pitta (fire) and Kapha (earth and water). Ideally these should all be in balance within the body. As stated earlier people are of different types to begin with, and when we get sick then we are even more out of balance.

Vata

According to Ayurvedic medicine a person of Vata temperament eats too much, prefers hot foods, is indecisive, has a low sex drive and is argumentative.

Pitta

Pitta people are disciplined. They are prone to thirst and hunger, fear and anger and are very emotional. They prefer sweet, astringent, bitter and cold food. They like perfume, cosmetics, are garullous, and have a love of people and knowledge.

Kapha

This person doesn't normally crave food, and prefer it hot, pungent and bitter. They have control over their appetite, heat, stress and fear. They prefer to move in high circles.

Symptoms of too much Vata

Impaired bodily functions, eating, digestion and elimination. Mental agitation, confusion and impaired memory. Dull senses and poor timing. Lack of joy and vitality. They can be short of breath, and suffer from insomnia, cold and anxiety.

Symptoms of too much Pitta

Poor vision, inflamed, unhealthy looking skin and obsessive personalities. Lacking in spirituality, irritable bowels, hemorrhoids, diarrhea and alcoholism. Poor reasoning ability and lack of joy and energy.

Symptoms of too much Kapha

Prone to sprains. Sexual impotence, overweight, inactive and a dry mouth. These people are intolerant, insecure, jealous and rude. Their immunity is low and their digestion is poor.

Aussie Vitamin offer range of ayurvedic products.
