ICELAND MOSS. Cetraria islandica. N.O. Lichenes.
Synonym : Cetraria, Iceland Lichen.
Habitat : Among other moss and grass in Sweden.
Features : Thallus about three inches high, branched, leafy, grey or light brown, channelled, terminates in flattened lobes, fringed with small papillm, tiny white spots on under surface. When wet, smell resembles seaweed.
Part used : Lichen.
Action : Demulcent, nutritive, tonic.
Chronic bronchial catarrh, pulmonary complaints. Nutrient properties of considerable value. Relieves obstinate coughs. The moss should be carefully washed before preparing the decoction of 1 ounce to 1 and a half pints of water simmered to 1 pint. Dose, wineglassful.
